Trying to Conceive-Designer Babies

Designer Babies

Trying to conceive is certainly an exciting time, at least at first when you think it is going to all go as planned. Then, as time marches on and no pregnancy occurs the idea of trying to conceive can become all consuming, extremely stressful, and full of doctors’ appointments trying to pinpoint the problem. For couples who have difficulties trying to conceive in vitro fertilization and other types of fertility procedures may be used to help the process along. It is successful for many couples who might not have been able to conceive naturally and has created many happy families in the process. However, in vitro fertilization and fertility drugs may be going too far. The issue of “designer babies” is coming up and many couples are really interested in choosing the sex of their baby, its eye and hair color, athletic ability, intelligence, and even height. Is this going too far? Some say yes, others say no, but either way you look at it the idea of “designer babies” can quickly eliminate the wide mix of people found in the population. Not to mention the equilibrium of males and females could be disrupted considerably.

Happy and Healthy

Most people you talk to will tell you they don’t care what sex their baby is or even what it looks like as long as it is “happy and healthy.” However, many people say they don’t care simply because they have no control over the sex of the baby in the first place. Setting your heat on a particular sex could certainly make it difficult if the child ends up being the opposite sex. Put the idea of “designer babies” in couples’ minds and you will find that many people like the idea of choosing the sex of their baby especially if they already have two of a certain sex. For example, a family with two boys might want a third that is guaranteed to be a girl or a family with three girls might want to try a fourth pregnancy if they are guaranteed a boy. Then, there are the families who want to pick the sexes of all their children because they want only boys, only girls, or a combination.

What do You Think?
So, do you want to choose the sex of your baby? Would you consider having your baby created with all of the attributes you consider to be worthy and/or attractive? Maybe or maybe not. However, if you have certain genetic health risks and your spouse does too then you may be more willing to test for that. The question is how far can you go in the process? Is screening for genetic disorders ok but choosing eye color isn’t? There are no clear answers and it’s something each couple will need to approach privately.
