Timing the Baby Dance Perfectly

When you’re trying to get pregnant, timing is everything. The “baby dance,” as couples who are trying to conceive often call it, has to happen within a very specific period of a few days during the month. If you miss out on those days, you’re going to miss out on becoming pregnant.

So, how does all of this work? Well, sperm can live for about two to three days once ejaculated. The egg can live for about 12 to 24 hours once it’s released during ovulation. To get pregnant, you have to time the baby dance such that those living sperm and that living egg have a chance to get together.

Now, timing the arrival of the sperm is pretty basic. All that takes is the baby dance. Timing ovulation, however, isn’t always easy. Being able to pinpoint ovulation is the key here. If you can know for sure when you’re ovulating, you’ll exponentially increase the likelihood of getting pregnant.

Timing the baby dance, then, means knowing when you ovulate. You can count on ovulating 14 days prior to your next period. If your period is consistently 28 days apart, you’ll ovulate on day 14 of your cycle. If you tend to have a 35-day long cycle, however, you’re probably going to ovulate on day 21.

To get it all right, you need to pinpoint ovulation. In addition to tracking your cycles, there are other signs that it’s time for the baby dance. Here are common indications you’re ovulating:

  • Tenderness of the breasts
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • A vaginal discharge that’s about the consistency of egg whites (also known as “egg-white cervical mucus)
  • An increase of about 0.4 to 1 degree in your basal body temperature.

Not all women experience all of these, of course. However, by charting your cervical mucus, tracking your BBT on a daily basis and making an ovulation calendar, within a few cycles you should be able to predict with a reasonable degree of accuracy when you’re ovulating, and therefore when exactly y0ou should be timing the baby dance.
