Supplementing Your Fertility Efforts with Acupuncture

When you’re struggling with infertility, you want to do everything you can to maximize your chances of success. Sure, you go the medical route, and heavily weigh options such as taking fertility drugs like Clomid, or even having a procedure like artificial insemination. Along the way, however, you combine those medical efforts with alternative treatments, in hopes that those alternative forms of treatment will give your other efforts a little boost.

One of the ways you might be able to help address infertility is with acupuncture. Now, before we go any further, let’s be clear: there are some conditions that cause infertility that acupuncture won’t address in any way. Endometriosis, PID or tubal adhesions can’t be helped by acupuncture. Those infertility issues need to be treated in a very different way.

The way that acupuncture can help with infertility is in the area of ovarian function. Acupuncture can help to increase the flow of blood to the ovaries and the endometrium, which can also help to create a thicker and richer lining, which can help with implantation.

In particular, people struggling with infertility can benefit from acupuncture in a number of cases. If you have elevated FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) levels that are interfering with conception, for example, it’s a good choice. The same goes for folks who’ve had multiple miscarriages. Women with luteal phase defect, PCOS and in some cases unexplained infertility can benefit as well.

If you decide to get acupuncture to help with your infertility struggles, there are a few things to keep in mind. First of all, it’s an entirely safe procedure when done in a sanitized environment by a professional acupuncturist. However, there is a slight risk of miscarriage if you visit an acupuncturist and you’re already pregnant, and if the incorrect acupuncture points are used. Make sure you talk to your doctor ahead of time if you’re worried about that kind of problem.

Acupuncture is usually combined with herbal treatments, and for the maximum effect you might consider adding in Maca or other fertility supplements to give your acupuncture treatment the little extra boost it needs to help with your infertility struggles.
