Prevent Birth Defects When Trying to Conceive

When you are trying to conceive you want to do everything right. That means taking the right prenatal vitamins, losing any extra weight, eating well, and timing intercourse for the right time to result in a pregnancy. However, recent news shows that there is a particular nutrient that can help prevent birth defects. Of course, most women readily recognize folic acid as an important nutrient when they are trying to conceive and throughout pregnancy to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. A new nutrient that may also play an important role in preventing birth defects is inositol.

Researchers believe that inositol may be a good complement to folic acid because it may help prevent certain birth defects that folic acid does not. So, the two together can reduce the risk of birth defects dramatically.

What to Eat

If you are interested in getting the recommended amount of inositol and folic acid you may choose to take a supplement. Or, you might prefer to eat foods rich in these nutrients. Some good foods to include in your diet include nuts, beans, oranges, bran, cantaloupe, and other foods high in these nutrients. It’s important to focus on eating a diet rich in these nutrients well before you try to conceive. The reason why is because neural tube defects occur in the first few weeks of pregnancy, generally when you aren’t even aware you are pregnant.

Studies are still under way to determine what role exactly inositol plays in neural tube defects, but so far it looks like it can help prevent certain types of neural tube defects. Talk with your doctor about inositol and folic acid and begin supplementing before trying to conceive.
