Making Your Baby’s Name Unique
The trend today is to name your baby in a unique way. You want your child to be an individual that stands out, and making your baby’s name unique is part of that process. Still, there are some very important principles to keep in mind as you search for the perfectly expressive and unique name for your baby:
- Today’s unique name could be the popular name of tomorrow. Just look at the rise in “Megans.” Just a few short decade ago, the name was almost nonexistent.
- Check the popularity lists. A name might sound unique to you, but be rising in popularity. If you want it to be unique, you need to check to make sure the name isn’t part of a hot trend.
- Google potential baby names. See what comes up in a web search for your baby’s name, both first and last. Chances are you’ll find some distant relative with the same name, but you never know for sure until you try.
- Keep in mind that “unique” doesn’t mean “unknown.” Consider names that were popular many years ago for sort of a “retro” approach. Just look at how the names “Elizabeth” and “Abigail,” once completely out of style, have returned to the fore in recent days.
- Consider a unique spelling. While you don’t want to insert numbers in the place of letters or use an ampersand in your baby’s name, you can consider a unique spelling. Switch out a “z” for an “s,” or throw a silent “h” into the mix.
- Look into ethnic names. From traditional African names to Celtic names, there are plenty of choices out there that will be unique and that will reflect your baby’s heritage (or at least your area of interest.).
- Be prepared. Choosing a unique name has consequences. If it’s an odd name, your child might be teased. Be ready to choose a more common nickname for your child, if this is a concern.
· Think about surnames as first names. If a family name in your ancestry has died out, consider giving it a new life by naming your child by that name. A family name of “Lauria,” for example, makes a unique and beautiful girl’s name.
