How to Do It Right
Let’s face it: talking about getting pregnant is about as sexy as talking about childbirth. When you’re trying to get pregnant, everything becomes about optimizing your chances of conception. You obsess over cervical mucus (bleech!), ovulation dates and your basal body temperature. It’s enough to take the fun right out of the baby-making process.
You might even be worried about what position to have sex in if you want to conceive. It’s just one more thing in a long list that you need to worry about.
Now, There are some old wives tales that tell you doing it in a certain position will help you get pregnant. However, the fact of the matter is that couples get pregnant in just about any sexual position you can think of. Still, if you’re having problem, there is one factor related to sexual position you might consider: gravity.
There is little medical research in the area of sexual position and conception. However, it stands to reason that, if you can keep the semen from leaking out of the vagina, you’re more likely to have the sperm travel into the cervix.
What does this mean for sexual position? It means that having sex standing, sitting, or with the woman on top may cause less sperm to travel toward the egg. It also means that afterwards you’re probably better off laying down for 15 minutes or so to encourage gravity to do its thing. You might even elevate your pelvis with a pillow.
Ultimately, the timing of conception has a lot more to do with whether you’ll get pregnant than your position during sex. The questions you need to be asking have less to do with how to have sex in order to conceive than when to have sex in order to conceive.
