How to Boost a Man’s Fertility
OK, so you’re trying to get pregnant. Your husband is on board with the project, and you think he might be a little excited about more than just the guaranteed sex. Unfortunately, you’ve been trying for a few months and haven’t had any success. So, you’ve started measuring your BBT and charting your cervical mucus, all while he’s happy to just do his little job.
Fortunately, there are some things your husband can do, too, to help get the ball rolling, so to speak:
· Raise that sperm count. No, without a doctor actually testing your husband’s sperm you’re not going to know what his count is. However, you can identify some possible causes of a low sperm count and eliminate them. Some of the most common causes of sperm count and sperm motility problems include things like smoking tobacco, alcohol use, drug use, and exposure to radiation. Knock some of these things out and you may find you’ll have better luck getting pregnant.
· Watch out for chemicals. There is some research to suggest that today’s man has around half of the sperm that a man did, on average, 50 years ago. The idea is that this is caused by pollutants and other chemicals that act like estrogen. These chemicals are known as xenoestrogens, and examples include some pesticides, some plastics, DDt and a variety of industrial pollutants. Reducing exposure to some of these items may help.
· Eat right. Diet isn’t just important for the woman who’s trying to conceive. It’s important for the man, as well. Make sure he’s getting a balanced diet. That diet should especially include things like fresh fruits and veggies, a variety of whole grains, legumes and low fat proteins. Get rid of excess carbs, as well as caffeine and artificial sweeteners.
· Zinc up. One of the most important nutrients for a man who’s trying to conceive is zinc. Consider taking a zinc supplement. Zinc is thought to help with sperm count as well as sperm health. A supplement that contains Vitamin C may also aid the process.
