Choosing a Pregnancy Test
Today I was in the pharmacy and thought I’d check out the pregnancy test aisle. I’m not exactly trying to get pregnant, but I’m not exactly not trying to get pregnant either… so, I thought it was worth checking out to see if there was anything new I needed to know about.
After checking over all the different pregnancy tests with digital displays, promises of early testing, and the like, I realized a pregnancy test is really just a pregnancy test. What surprised me the most were the prices. I truly was shocked to see a single digital pregnancy test cost close to $25! Of course, I was in the pharmacy and not in a cheaper store, but still! The last time I was pregnant I bought three or four tests to verify the positive result and then double and triple verify before I ever went to the doctor. I don’t remember the prices I paid a few years ago, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t that much!
Some of the faster response tests are just as expensive. I guess that’s the luxury of testing early instead of waiting to miss your period. Out of curiosity I checked the Baby Hopes stock of pregnancy tests and was pleasantly surprised to find they are all quite affordable. Even the generic pregnancy test strips were under $6 for a pack of 5! That’s definitely what I’m buying this next time around. You can test more often and give in to your curiosity without breaking the bank.
Of course, it’s cool to have a pregnancy test that gives you a smiley face if you are pregnant or a frown if you aren’t. However, if you are like many women you will buy more than one pregnancy test during the conception process. The first one you buy might be the “cool” one but when you find yourself spending a hundred dollars or more per month on negative pregnancy tests you might change your mind. The generic testing strips are really a great way to go and you can buy them in bulk very affordably. Once you get a positive test you can then run out and buy a “cool” pregnancy test if you want to have the memory of a smiley face confirming you have a little one on the way!
Do any of you have a favorite pregnancy test? If so, what is it and how much does it cost?

My cycle is, on average, 42 days in length (kinda long-ish, dontcha think?!)
My LMP was October 21; I had some light spotting on the 21st [Nov], thought it was my period.
I have sore boobs, lightheaded-ness, fatigue, weepy-ness, and some nausea.
I am 11 days late; usually HPTs don’t accurately indicate pregnancy until two weeks after expected AF.
If I missed a period, would I still experience symptoms of AF like this?
Is it normal for my va-jay-jay to be purple, and my cervix to be high up/hard?
Please help.
Great questions! Usually, you need to read the pregnancy test within the time frame it says on the box and/or directions. A positive test a day later is not necessarily a positive sign of pregnancy. That’s because “evaporation lines” may develop if the test sits too long and this will appear as a positive result although you may not be pregnant. Always read pregnancy tests in the time designated in the instructions, which usually indicates a five or so minute period. If you think you may be pregnant retest to be sure and only consider the reading within the time indicated. Hope that helps!
I took a test on Two test earlier this week that didn’t work at all but I looked at them the next day and it showed the test mark and a positive result since then I have taken several and all but one were negative and the other was so faint I could’ve been making myself see the line. I am just now on my first missed day though my cyles tend to be irreggular. Could the positive have been wrong or can you get a positve one time and a negitive later?
It’s possible that you are pregnant and there isn’t enough hormone yet for a positive test. Many women find themselves in this situation and the best thing to do is wait a few days and test again. Waiting is hard, but if you are pregnant you will know soon enough! Good luck!
My cycle is often 28 days, i’m supposed to have my period yesterday and i tested this morning – negative. is it still too early even after missed period?
