What Should I Do Prior To Getting Pregnant?

There are several things that a woman should do prior to getting pregnant.  Some of these things will help to prepare her body for pregnancy, while some of these things are intended more to insure the health and well-being of her baby.

Taking the time to plan your pregnancy, before you get pregnant, is one of the best things that you can do.  By practicing birth control before you are ready to become pregnant, you are giving yourself the time that you need to prepare for pregnancy and for birth.  While you can’t time your pregnancy right down to the due date, you can do your best to be sure that pregnancy does not occur before you are ready.

Exercise is an important part of pre-pregnancy planning.  If you can be at or near your ideal weight when becoming pregnant, it will help the way that your pregnancy progresses.  Evidence even suggests that your baby will directly benefit from you being physically in shape.  In addition, exercising now will help your body to better handle the nine months of changes that it is going through, as well as the actual labor and birth process.

Cutting out or reducing alcohol and caffeine are other things that you should do prior to getting pregnant.  Each of these things has been shown, in larger doses, to be harmful to your developing baby.

Getting the right vitamins and minerals is important as well.  You don’t want to overdose on vitamins, however.  A regular over-the-counter multivitamin should do the trick.  Both moms- and dads-to-be should take a daily multivitamin both to help with fertility and to help with pregnancy.

Stopping smoking or drug use prior to getting pregnant also has obvious benefits.  These things are known to have links to a variety of birth defects and pregnancy complications.

Knowledge is your greatest asset when it comes to pregnancy.  Prior to getting pregnant, you should take some time to read up on pregnancy.  Get to understand the nutritional needs that you and your baby will have.  Read up on what to expect during pregnancy.   Learn about your options for delivery and labor.  By taking in as much knowledge as you can, you greatly increase your chances of having a happy and healthy pregnancy, as well as a happy and healthy child.
