When a couple is having trouble trying to conceive, it can be a very frustrating situation. Identifying the problem can often be rather difficult, and can sometimes even be emotionally draining. One of the things that can affect your success when trying to conceive is FSH levels. It is important to understand, therefore, what FSH levels mean when trying to conceive.

FSH is short for Follicle Stimulating Hormone. FSH is produced by the pituitary gland, and is present in both men and women. IN women, FSH helps to promote the growth of eggs, and to prepare eggs for fertilization. FSH levels are important when trying to conceive, because FSH levels can affect your ability to conceive.

For women, FSH levels are related directly to the woman’s ovarian reserve. The ovarian reserve is the number of eggs that a woman has on reserve, that may become fertilized and lead to conception. Elevated FSH levels mean that a woman may have a low number of eggs, or a low number of viable eggs that may become fertilized. Therefore, elevated FSH levels mean a woman may have difficulty when trying to conceive.

Testing of FSH levels is one of the most common and most basic tests that couples who are having problems trying to conceive will have. A simple blood test can indicate FSH levels. This test is typically done on day 3 of the woman’s menstrual cycle, and is known as a Day 3 FSH test. A FSH level of 10 is considered average. FSH levels of above 25 mean that a woman will almost definitely have problems trying to conceive. FSH levels of 10 to 25 mean that a woman’s FSH levels are borderline.

Some studies suggest that only one out of one hundred women with elevated FSH levels will be able to successfully conceive without outside fertility treatments. Most often, dramatic treatments, such as the use of donor eggs and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) will be needed for a woman with high FSH levels who is trying to conceive.
