Weight and Fertility Struggles

The simple fact of the matter is that weight can play a role in your fertility struggles. Being underweight or overweight can cause fertility struggles, or it can also complicate other issues that are causing fertility struggles.

If you want to maximize your chances of conception, you need to stay within a healthy weight range.

Now, of course, being overweight or underweight doesn’t mean you can’t conceive. It just means that it can be more difficult.

One way that your weight can cause fertility struggles is in the area of ovulation. For some women, being overweight can affect your monthly cycle. It might even keep you from ovulating, or from being able to tell when you’re ovulating. This is because women who are overweight may produce an excess of estrogen, causing a hormonal imbalance that negatively impacts ovulation.

Weight can get in the way of conception and cause fertility struggles in another way. For some couples, it may be more difficult for the man to penetrate deeply during sex. This makes it hard for the sperm to make it to the cervical mucus, which carries the sperm up the fallopian tubes. If you add to that problems with sperm motility, you are actually multiplying your fertility struggles.

Losing weight too fast can cause problems with ovulation, and so can being too skinny. Sometimes, if you don’t have enough body fat, your body will try to prevent you from ovulating, as well.

It’s important to stay within a healthy and recommended weight range so as to eliminate your weight as a factor in your fertility struggles.

As always, if you need to gain or lose weight in order to improve your chances of conceiving, you should talk with your health care provider. Losing weight too fast or gaining too much weight too fast can have a detrimental effect on other areas of your health, as well.
