I
have been getting quite a few emails from women who are having troubles
getting pregnant due to having PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). I am
not a medical expert so I have gone in search of helpful information from
our affiliated
sites.
~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~ Understanding
Polycystic Ovarian
Syndrome ~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~
It may not be a
household word, but polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS, is a common
endocrine abnormality that affects five to seven percent of women of
reproductive age. It is one of the leading causes of infertility in women
and can have other serious implications for women's health and lifestyle.
Join our panel of experts as they discuss what every woman should know about
the causes, symptoms, and diagnosis of PCOS. Topics will include:
What
are some theories about the causes of PCOS? Are there possible genetic
factors? What are the most common symptoms of PCOS? Are menstrual
irregularities always a symptom? How common is excessive hair growth in PCOS
patients? How is a diagnosis of PCOS made?

~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~ Getting
Pregnant after Birth
Control ~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~**~~
For non-hormonal
methods of birth control (condoms and IUD for example), getting pregnant can
be easier as your body doesn't have to regain the hormonal equilibrium
needed in order to get and stay pregnant.
With birth control pills
that use a combination of hormones and the mini pill which only contains
progesterone only, it usually takes about 1 to 3 months for your system to
return to your natural hormonal balance. Unfortunately with
the Depo-Provera shot, it can take quite a bit longer, up to
18 months.
It is probably best to start trying to conceive after
your period has returned and your system seems to be back
to "normal". Allowing your system to regain it's
natural functioning, before trying to get pregnant, will make
it easier for you to know when you are ovulating and allow you to time
intercourse to maximize the chances of conception.
Another benefit
of waiting until your menstrual cycle returns to normal is that it will allow
you to more accurately calculate the baby's age based on the first day of
your last menstrual period.
Taking a herbal supplement may help your body
reach it's hormonal balance a bit quicker. Be sure to discuss
this with your doctor to see if this would be helpful for you.
Some
healthy changes you can make to your lifestyle while waiting for your body to
return to it's balance are:
- Eat a nutritionally balanced diet - Take
folic acid - Stop smoking - Limit alcohol intake - Exercise - Try to
control your stress
levels
