Trying to Conceive with Vitex and Chasteberry

Women have used Chaste berry for centuries. The scientific name is Vitex agnus-castus, but most women know it by chaste berry or chaste berry. It has been used during childbirth and to start lactation in women. The way chaste berry helps women get pregnant is that it assists in hormonal balance in women. Many times women are unable to conceive based on hormonal imbalances due to polycystic ovary syndrome, PCOS, or for many other reasons. When women don’t ovulate or menstruate normally then they are unable to conceive.

Many women experience this problem when they do not produce enough progesterone during their menstrual cycle’s luteal phase. This is referred to as corpus luteum insufficiency or luteal phase defect. When there is not enough progesterone in the female body then ovarian cysts may form. PCOS sufferers may have high levels of prolactin, which can decrease fertility. Luckily, vitex/chasteberry may help some women with these problems. It’s not a cure-all, but it can be helpful for some women.

Does it Work?

When Vitex or chaste berry are used and are successful it is based on the effect it has on the pituitary glands and the hypothalamus. It stimulates them to increase the production of luteinizing hormone (LH) and inhibits to some degree the production of FSH, follicle stimulating hormone. As a result, the progesterone levels in the body begin to increase. Chaste berry is not a hormone and does not increase progesterone levels on its own. Instead, it is an effect that this occurs. Many times women experiencing leutal phase defect have levels of prolactin that are too high. Vitex is an effective treatment for these women.

Chasteberry or Vitex works really for women and usually by their third menstrual cycle major changes will be seen. Immediate results should not be expected, however. It may not be able to take effect, either for several months so this should be considered. Don’t expect the same results as taking progesterone because Vitex is not a hormone. Give it time and you should see your cycle regulate and hopefully ovulate!

There are fertility supplements that combine a variety of herbs and vitamins that will help give your reproductive system a ‘tune-up’. FertilAid is one and FertilityBlend is another. They both contain Vitex to help balance your hormone levels and regulate your menstrual cycle.
