How to Administer Injectable Fertility Drugs
Administering injectable fertility drugs can be a little bit intimidating. Often women who are prescribed injectable fertility drugs are more than scared at the idea of poking themselves with a needle, and begin to wonder if there isn’t an easier way for them to address their fertility issues. The good news is that many women with fertility problems are able to administer their own injectable fertility drugs, just as many diabetics are able to manage their diabetes with injectable insulin.
The first step in administering injectable fertility drugs it to find a safe place to administer the injections. You will want to find a quiet, comfortable and clean place where you can be undisturbed. Often, the bathroom or the kitchen will be good spots, although you need to find what works for you.
The next step is cleanliness. You will want to make sure that there is a clean countertop where you can set your supplies down during the process. You will also want to wash your hands clean with soap, and make sure that they are thoroughly dried.
After this, you will need to get your supplies together. You will need your injectable fertility drugs, any fluids that are to be used to dilute the drugs, syringes, needles both for mixing and injecting the drugs, alcohol swabs and a container for your sharps. If you’re administering more than one injectable fertility drug you will need to make sure to keep the equipment for the two separate.
Next you will mix the injectable fertility drugs as the directions indicate. Some injectable fertility drugs require that they be diluted, some require mixing a powder with a solution, and some come right out of the bottle. Make sure you know which need what processes. Make sure to keep your vials clean by wiping them with a fresh alcohol swab before inserting the needles through the stopper.
Next, you will need to choose where you are going to inject the fertility drugs. The most convenient and often the most comfortable site is the belly. You should avoid the area right around the belly button. Clean the area with an alcohol swab, and allow it to dry.
Now, it is time to inject the drug. Use your off hand to pinch a fold of your skin and hold it. Use your dominant hand to pick up the syringe, holding it like a pencil. You will then quickly puncture it into the fold of skin. Keep the needle there. Slowly push the plunger down and then rapidly withdraw the needle. Use an alcohol swab to keep pressure on the injection site for a moment or two.
Finally, you will need to get rid of your sharps. Then, clean up your working area and put away your injectable fertility drugs into their usual place so you can find them next time.
With a little patience, you will find that you are becoming a pro in no time at all.
