How Can I Improve Sperm Motility?

Many men suffer from difficulties with trying to conceive due to a problem with their sperm.  In some cases, it may be that a man’s sperm count is low – that he is just not producing a sufficient amount of viable sperm in order to conceive.  In other cases, the problem may be with abnormal sperm – that the man is producing sperm that are not shaped correctly and that may not be able to fertilize an egg for this reason.  In many cases, however, a man may have problems with the way that the sperm moves, referred to as sperm motility.  Fortunately, there may be some ways to improve sperm motility.

One way that may help to improve sperm motility is to examine your diet.  Some studies suggest that a diet that is low in carnitine may cause problems with sperm motility.  Specifically, the two protiens L-Carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine are thought to help improve sperm motility by transferring fatty acids into a place where they can be turned into energy for the sperm to use in their long journey.

In some cases, low sperm motility can be caused by a deficiency of a hormone.  If this is the case, you can improve sperm motility through a variety of medications.  However, it is much more rare for a man to have poor sperm motility due to a hormonal deficiency than it is for a man to have poor sperm motility due to a different cause.

Ultimately, there may be no way to improve sperm motility.  In some men, sperm motility is caused by a genetic defect, which cannot be corrected with supplements, hormones, or medicines.  In other cases, low sperm motility may be caused by some other physical defect, such as a varicocele.  In these cases, correcting the physical problem may or may not even improve sperm motility.  Still, until you have been able to definitively know whether you have one of these causes, it is worth pursuing other avenues.
