How Can I Control My Emotions While Going Through Fertility Problems?

Fertility problems can be extremely frustrating.  In addition to the disappointment and anxiety that comes with having a blocked goal, having problems trying to conceive can create a veritable roller coaster of emotions.  Frustration, hope, disappointment, anger, sadness, and anticipation can all be characteristic emotions of someone who is having difficulty wiht fertility problems.  In addition, some people have feelings of powerlessness, and even guilt or a loss of self-worth and identity.

Compounding the emotional struggles of fertility problems is the fact that these emotions can have a negative impact on your sex life.  This, in turn, can make it even more difficult to conceive.

Couples who are having fertility problems and who are having trouble controlling their emotions may benefit from counseling.  In fact, some fertility specialists are even requiring that their patients have at least one session with a psychologist, psychiatrist, or sex therapist before beginning fertility treatments.

There are a variety of types of settings that you might receive counseling that will help you control your emotions while going through fertility problems.  An individual or a couple might discuss their emotions with a mental health professional, such as a psychologist or a psychiatrist.  They might enlist the help of a specialized type of counselor, such as a sex therapist.  Your fertility specialist or health care provider might also be able to recommend a support group for couples having problems with fertility.  In a group setting, you may be able to share your feelings with others, and learn what others have done to help with controlling their emotions.  This setting can also provide you with opportunities to discuss fertility treatments and techniques with other people who may be having the same types of fertility problems as you are.

If your fertility problems are leading to signs of depression, you should make sure to seek a mental health professional as soon as you are able.  Depression can be a very serious and destructive condition, and it is one that is very treatable.
