How Long After Conception Does Implantation Bleeding Occur?

When you are trying to get pregnant, you are always looking for clues to let you know that your hopes and dreams are on their way to being reality.

One of the initial signs that women look for, as a sign that they are pregnant, is implantation bleeding.

What Happens Before Implantation

Before implantation bleeding is a possibility, there are several steps that need to occur in your body.

Ovulation

On average, your ovaries will release an egg (ovulation), into your fallopian tubes, 14 days before your period is due. Your egg will survive 12 to 24 hours after ovulation, and then will start to disintegrate, making conception impossible.

Conception

If your timing for intercourse is good, there may be a lucky sperm waiting to fertilize the egg (conception) upon release. Healthy sperm can survive up to 5 days after ejaculation in the woman’s reproductive tract. Optimally, having sex, as close to ovulation as possible, will increase your chances of conception.

Implantation

Once conception has occurred, the fertilized egg, will travel down the fallopian tube to the uterus. As the egg is traveling, the cells will continue to divide and grow in size. When the egg arrives at the uterus, it will attach to the uterine wall (implantation) and start to produce the hormone that pregnancy tests detect, hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin). The time required for the egg to travel to the uterus and implant is usually between 7 and 10 days.

When the egg implants, some women experience implantation bleeding. You may notice a small amount of blood when you wipe, after using the bathroom.  The blood is typically a light pink or brownish tinted color.   The amount is much less than when your period starts. When the egg implants in your uterus, it develops a layer of cells, trophoblast, which surrounds the egg. The trophoblast provides nutrients to the growing egg by burrowing into the uterine wall. As it pulls the egg into the endometrium, a small amount of blood can leak into the uterine cavity, causing implantation bleeding. Implantation bleeding does not occur with every woman.   Usually only about 30% of women will experience implantation bleeding.  You will usually see implantation bleeding 4 to 7 days before your period is due if you are one of the 30%.

If u have sex on sunday and u take a pills on 6.00 oclok on monday is it possible for that person to be pregency

  • earthsmagic

I’m not sure what pill you are referring to. If it is the morning after pill, you are supposedly supposed to be able to prevent pregnancy up to five days (120 hours) after unprotected sex.

i had unprotected sex on the 20th march 2013 and for the past 3 days iv been feeling really dizzy and sick but can’t understand why that is.. could there be a possibility that I could be on the verge of being pregnant but im not taking and contraception.
could anyone help me or give me any advice?

  • Elsa Sowles

I have been on birth control pills for like 7+ years and I missed all but the first pill in my third week. I had sex at least two times on Monday the day after I took my last pill (First pill of the third week- Sunday) From Monday til now I have not had a pill and I had sex again on Friday.. What are the chances I am pregnant. I took a tests yesterday morning and it was negative, the only reason I took it was because I have been sick for like a month now… Head cold and flu like symptoms… My friend told me to take a test in 2 weeks…. I am kinda not patient and was seeking any advice or knowledge from anyone…. Thanks-

  • earthsmagic

Anytime you have unprotected sex, there is always a chance that you could be pregnant. The symptoms you are having could point to other things though like you are just getting sick.

  • earthsmagic

Your friend is right. :) You will need to wait a bit in order to test. It typically takes about 10 days after conception for hcg to start showing up in your system if you are pregnant.

  • Elsa Sowles

What are the chances I would be… Any thoughts?

  • earthsmagic

Unfortunately, due to you being on birth control, there is no way to make any sort of guess on it. :( Sorry. As aggravating as it is, you are going to have to wait until the time frame passes and use a pregnancy test.

  • Elsa Sowles

    Ok thanks u..

I’ve been on the pill since dec…I finished may last pack on 3/14..I ovulated 3/28..I had sex 3/24, 3/27, 3/28, 3/30… could I b pregnant

  • Kait

I had unprotected sex a couple nights ago and had been ovulating. Today I woke up and when I wiped, I had a little bit of bright red blood. Is it possible that this could be implantation bleeding and if so, would it happen that quickly?

  • earthsmagic

Implantation usually occurs about 6 to 12 days after ovulation. I don’t think what you are experiencing is implantation bleeding.

  • earthsmagic

Usually it takes a while for your body to get back to normal after hormonal b/c but if you are sure you ovulated on the 28th, the timing of intercourse was perfect. Pregnancy is a possibility under the circumstances you presented.

My boyfriend and I had broken up, and we were having sex daily and he was busting inside of me. A few days after the break up, I had sex with another guy, on December 30th 2012, but he pulled out. I took a pregnancy test on January 5th, 2013… got a positive result, basically 6 days after intercourse. My due date is September 19th, I have irregular periods.. who is more likely to be the father?

  • TTCwithPCOS

Definitely your ex. Takes at least 3-4 days after implantation to get a positive result on a HPT. So to be the new guy it would have had to be at least 10 days before you got a + and you only had 6. Little one wouldn’t have even implanted yet.

  • Andrew Jackson

I had sex with my girlfriend on the 18th of February and period came a day or 2 after, she started feeling Pregnancy symptoms on the 5th of March and missed her next period on the 11th. She is pregnant and 6weeks. Could I be the father?

  • Lindsey

The date I started my last period was February 26th. I used to be very irregular, but then my period started coming the 26th of every month, give or take a few days. A few days before my period, my breasts are always extremely tender and sore, I’m very fatigued, and honestly, I feel like hell until the day it comes. March 26th passed with no period symptoms at all. I took into account it would be a couple days late because there is only 28 days in February. I realized that after I took a pregnancy test and it was negative, so I definitely tested too early. This time, my breasts don’t hurt at all, no bloating, no breast swelling, nothing. It’s as if nature forgot that I was supposed to get my period. On March 23rd, I thought my period was starting because I was spotting a little but, but there was barely nothing there. Could that have been implantation bleeding? My boyfriend and I have been pulling out since I came off of my depo shot almost 9 months ago. I took another test on April 2nd, and that was also negative. I got the First Response hpt that is supposed to detect pregnancy 6 days before your missed period, and I got a negative result almost a week after it was due. Does that mean I’m not pregnant, or am I still testing too early? I don’t want to keep wasting tests. I keep wearing panty liners around just incase, and now my period is a week and a half late. Should I still wait, or take another test?

  • Lindsey

To add to this, yesterday I randomly got what felt like a small period cramp on my right side lower pelvic area, where I always get my period cramps, when I do get them. I also just had a sharp pain across the same area, it was nothing too intense though.

  • Netta

Ok I’m on birth control and I missed five pills this month . I had sex around the times I missed the pills and two or three weeks later I’m experiencing pregnancy symptoms . Could I be pregnant ?? Help is needed and would be appreciated !!

  • earthsmagic

If that was the only time you had sex with her in Feb, you probably didn’t get her pregnant as ovulation would have occurred approximately 14 days before her period arrived.

  • earthsmagic

I would try one more test just to make sure. If you were irregular in the past, it is possible that something has triggered an irregular cycle this month for you. Extra stress, starting a rigorous exercise program, being sick in the past month, starting or stopping medication can all cause you to have an irregular cycle. If you get another negative test result and your period doesn’t come in the next couple of weeks, I would suggest that you visit your doctor to see if something is going on with your system.

  • earthsmagic

If you didn’t take your B/C as scheduled and had unprotected sex around when you were ovulating, there is always a chance of you being pregnant unfortunately.

  • Lindsey

Thank you so much. I still haven’t gotten it, nothing really has been new that I’ve been doing to trigger something irregular, but I guess I may just have to make that doctor’s appointment, maybe in a week or so.

  • Boo

boyfriend pulled out on saturday, i was supposed to get my period on tuesday. now it’s thursday and no period, but i had slightly pink white discharge this morning. is this implantation bleeding? is it possible for implantation to happen five days after sex?

  • Julz

My Lmp was 3/17/13.. My boyfriend and I had unprotected sex on 3/30 & 3/31 but he pulled out everytime. I’ve been feeling nauseas and have been sleeping more than usual this whole week. Took apregnancy test today but was negative. Is it me overeacting or could I possibly be pregnant even tho he pulled out everytime?

  • earthsmagic

If you are saying that your period started on the 17th and if you have a normal 28 day cycle, you would have ovulated on March 26 (as calculated on our ovulation calendar.) If you had sex after that point, chances of you being pregnant are pretty limited. Having said that, the pull out method is not a guarantee that you won’t get pregnant if you are having unprotected sex around the time you ovulate. All it takes is one sperm to fertilize the egg. If you are really looking to not get pregnant, some other, more reliable form of birth control would be a better option for you.

  • MILITARYGIRL45

Me and my husband are trying to have a child. My period was April 1st to the 5th.I’m 48 and my doctor says I’m healthy and fertile. We had sex every day from march 28th to April 12th. Could I be pregnant? My period came on the 1st till the 4th of April.

  • earthsmagic

Based on our ovulation calendar and assuming you have a normal 28 day cycle, it says:

Monday 1st April 2013 – First day of your cycle
    Thursday 11th April 2013 – A little bit fertile
    Friday 12th April 2013 – Fertile
    Saturday 13th April 2013 – VERY fertile
Sunday 14th April 2013 – Time to ovulate
Wednesday 24th April 2013 – A home pregnancy test may work now.

You were in the fertile time period, but seemed to stop having sex right before you ovulated. Sperm can survive up to 5 days, so you should have had sperm ready to fertilize the egg after you ovulated.

    Good Luck!

  • Britt

I had unprotected sex on february 23rd, i took the morning after pill and a week later i got my period, after that i waited 3 weeks and took a pregnancy test that came out negative but this month I’m a week and a half late…could I be pregnant or this could be just a side effect of the morning after pill?oh,but last week i did have same small amount of blood that could be spotting, although it has happen to me before..

  • earthsmagic

A little researching online shows that you can have a delayed or odd period the cycle following the morning after pill. It is highly unlikely you are pregnant.

  • Inquiring Lady

I symptoms of ovulation on 4/13 later that evening my boyfriend and I had unprotected sex is there a chance I can get pregnant? If so when should I take a pregnancy test?

  • Csevin

You could have a cyst that is causing your symptoms.

  • earthsmagic

Yes, there is a possibility that you could get pregnant. You may want to test in about 10 days after you ovulated depending on the sensitivity of the test you use.

After implantation occurs is it normal to have pain in the lower left side of the abdominal

  • tcup

Hey my husband and I have been trying to get pregnant since last year!! Ladt week I bled for one day and afterwards I had pinkish discharge when I wiped, for like a day, does that mean implantation took place?

  • irishg

also jus adding to it…i had gotten some mild cramping a day or two after my period stopped which i normally dnt get.

  • earthsmagic

It’s unlikely you are pregnant due to the timing, but unfortunately, the only way to know for sure is when your next period arrives. Keep in mind that if you are extremely stressed while you are waiting, it could cause a delay in your period actually arriving.

  • earthsmagic

If you search in google about cramping after implantation, you will see it varies from woman to woman. If it is a sharp lasting pain, you should check with your doctor as it could be a symptom of something else going on with you.

  • earthsmagic

It really depends on where in your cycle that happened. If it was between 6 and 12 days past ovulation, it is possible it was implantation bleeding. Bleeding at different times than your period can also signal a hormonal imbalance in your system.

  • Amanda

I started my period on november 23 2012 i had sex on december 4th umprotected my ex came into town and we had sex on december eighth protected but condom broke. I also had irregular periods
I havent had a period since but every hpt comes up negative
I indeed had implantation bleeding(pink/brown discharge) on december 12th and 13th followed by light cramping in pelvic area. I gave up on being pregnant due to negative tests but i have pregnancy symptoms and my stomach is getting bigger. I know of women who never shhow positive on hpt but are indeed pregnant. I have two questions could i be pregnant and if so who is likely to be the father current partner or my ex? Very confused

  • just me

I thought I might be pregnant so I went and bought a cheap hpt that turned out to be an ovulation test it came up positive I had unprotected sex that night and started my period the next day. My cycles are very irregular it’s been two Weeks since the unprotected sex and I’ve taken hpt the right ones only to get a negative and even got a blood test which came up negative Monday of this week. I’m beginning to have symptoms could I just be to early for a positive test????

  • earthsmagic

Unfortunately, due to your irregular periods, there really is no way to tell who the father would be. You really should go see your doctor to find out the cause of your irregular periods and to do further testing to find out if you are pregnant or not.

  • earthsmagic

If you period started the next day, the chances that you are pregnant are very very slim. You really need to work with your doctor to find out the cause of your irregular cycles.

  • Rina

I started my period around March 29th and it lasted 5 days. Usually my periods are 5 to 6 days long. So my boyfriend usually have sex every time we get together (sorry TMI) and we don’t use protection. We are trying to conceive so i hope that this works this time. We had sex on the 5th and 6th of April and i don’t know when i ovulate.

My periods have been pretty on point. My period was suppose to start on April 22nd or the 23rd. On April 17th i had really light bleeding only when i wiped. It got a little heavier but not like my regular period.

it wouldn’t last long just really light color blood and brown blood. I thought my period had come earlier but it was unusual because it has never been that light before and it lasted 3 to 4 days. I read that every woman’s body is different and implantation bleeding can last for that long. I used a tampon and when i had taken the tampon out there was no blood and only brown, so of course naturally i thought i had stopped but it kept coming and going the same over and over.

I don’t have sore breasts and only slight nausea when i eat some things i have headaches here and there and the occasional light headedness but i don’t know if its all in my head This would be my first pregnancy and i am hoping i am pregnant because we have been trying for 2 years now. Can anyone please help!

  • Peggy

The first day of my last period was March 23rd,we took an ovulation test and it came out positive on April 5th.I’ve been taking multiple pregnancy test and are all coming out negative, except today’s was a faint negative.I have discharge after wiping and am feeling bloated…..am I testing too early?

  • just me

I took two hpt today and both had very faint positive lines within the first minute. Taking another test in the am then off to the dr.’s for a blood test :)

As your period was supposed to start yesterday or today, if you don’t get your period, taking a pregnancy test might be in order.

When you say faint negative, what do you mean?
