Coming to Grips with the Fertility Struggle

Struggling with fertility is never easy. Even if you’ve only been trying to get pregnant for a few months, you can begin to feel hopeless. You start to use words like “barren” and “childless,” at least inside your own mind. Struggling with fertility, in many ways, is struggling with your own hopes and dreams, and with your identity as a person.

Still, it’s important to keep things in perspective. The constant bouncing between anticipation, hope and disappointment is going to take its toll on you if you’re not careful. Here are some important things to keep in mind in order to come to grips with your fertility struggle:

  • Being pregnant or having a child doesn’t define you as a person. You have value, quite apart from whether or not you bring a child into the world. In the end, not giving birth doesn’t mean you’re less of a person or any less important than someone who does give birth.
  • Don’t give up hope easily. The fact of the matter is that most couples who want to conceive a child and attempt to do so for 12 months will meet with success. If you’ve only been trying for two or three months, hang in there. Most fertility specialists won’t even see you until you’ve been trying for a year.
  • Fertility medicine has come a long way. There are inexpensive fertility medications like Clomid that can help many women get pregnant. If you do have to seek out help, there is plenty to be found. Some of it can be very expensive, to be sure, but it’s out there.
  • There are other options. If you want the joy of raising a child, there are other options. There is, of course, infant adoption. But there’s also a great need for foster and adoptive parents of older children, too. Maybe your fertility issues can be used to help provide a safe and loving environment for a child who’s already been born and is in need.
